Who We Are

The Traverse Area Gluten Free Support Group (TAGFSG) provides information and resources to those who cannot tolerate wheat, barley, rye and oats in their diet.  The TAGFSG serves the counties of Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau in Michigan.

Whether you live in the area or are just visiting our beautiful area in northwest lower Michigan we make following a Gluten Free diet easier and more understandable!  Make sure to check out our newest page Traveling in Michigan.

What We Do

We have a new meeting schedule for the 2010 year and a new location.  We will meet every other month starting in January on the 2nd Thursday.  Every other month will be a Dinner Outing starting in February on the 2nd Thursday

Our new location is First Christian Church, 3686 South Airport Road West in Traverse City (west of Best Buy). 

We have informative speakers from our area as well as nationally known speakers. 

Very popular, are our Dinner Outings with local restaurants and Special Events where we get together and share information.

Lisa Maxbauer Price Speaker for Traverse Area Gluten Free Group

Author and Editor Lisa Maxbauer Price for FIRST for Women magazine will be the guest speaker at our next meeting. Ms. Maxbauer will speak to the Traverse Area Gluten Free Group on January 12 at 7:00 pm at First Christian Church, located at 3686 S. Airport Road W. in Traverse City.  She will give a presentation on how articles are researched and written and how products are included in the magazine.  The magazine has had several articles on gluten free living in the past year. FIRST delivers positive information about health and nutrition and more.   Lisa will also answer any questions as well.

New guests are invited to come at 6:30 p.m. for an informal question and answer session with members of our group.  Guests are welcome and anyone following a gluten free diet.

Gastroenterologist, Robert Barnes MD as featured speaker

The Traverse Area Gluten Free Support Group (TAGFSG) will have their medical advisor, Robert Barnes MD Gastroenterologist, as their Speaker at their September 8, 2011 meeting.  The meeting will take place at First Christian Church, located at 3686 S. Airport Road W. in Traverse City, MI at 7:00 pm.  Dr. Barnes will share the latest information from the medical community relating to the celiac condition including recent research, current opinions and the latest testing information.  A question and answer period will follow.  This is always an informative meeting.  Join us!

Guests are welcome and anyone following a gluten free diet.  This lecture and meeting will be of special interest to celiacs and their families or caregivers.  New guests are welcome to join us at 6:30 pm for an informal question and answer session.



Potluck Dinner

& "Chocolate"

Barbara Disborough, author of the “Guide to Chocolate in the Grand Traverse Region” will speak to our group

The Traverse Area Gluten Free Support Group (TAGFSG) will meet on Thursday, June 9 at 7:00 pm at First Christian Church, 3686 S. Airport Road in Traverse City.   Members are asked to bring a favorite GF potluck dish to share and list the ingredients to display in consideration of those with food allergies, along with the recipe. This is always a popular meeting for us. 

Our Guest Speaker is the Author of the “Guide to Chocolate in the Grand Traverse Region”.  Barbara is an entertaining speaker who knows her chocolate and knows… where to find it.  She will share her favorite Gluten Free chocolate finds with us.

Weight Loss & Fitness

The Traverse Area Gluten Free Support Group (TAGFSG) will be meeting on Thursday, May 12, 2011 Thursday at 7:00 pm at First Christian Church, 3686 W. South Airport Road, in Traverse City. 

Nita Nowland, owner of Curves in Traverse City will speak on Weight Loss and Fitness.  Curves has recently come out with new Gluten Free Weight Loss products that complement their Fitness Program. 

Trying to lose some stubborn weight or just get more physically fit… Nita will explain how to successfully have fun, get fit and lose weight.

Learn from the expert what fitness techniques work and why.  Want to be in better physical shape… and prevent injuries, learn the right way, how and when to safely workout.

Calling all GF cooks!

MARCH 10 (Thursday) 

Tom Sisco, Oryana’s talented Baker has graciously offered to speak to our group and share GF baking tips.  Tom has extensive bread baking experience from Bay Bread Company in Traverse City.  He manages the Bakery at Oryana and is responsible for the delicious GF breads, muffins, cookies, fruit pies, cream pies, cakes and much more. Oryana is a healthy natural food cooperative.   www.oryana.coop.  If you enjoy baking you won’t want to miss this meeting.

Dinner Outing

APRIL 14 (Thursday) – Dinner Outing – Outback Steakhouse in Traverse City

The Outback Steakhouse will be hosting our next Dinner Outing on Thursday, April 14 at 7:00 pm.  The Outback is located at 3501 Marketplace Circle, Traverse City, MI 49684.  The Outback was the first national restaurant chain to offer a GF Menu and it is an extensive one.  They take great pride in serving the freshest, highest-quality food possible.
